Each half-hour documentary follows an expert investigator as he or she brings rigorous, real-life scrutiny to a search for the truth behind so-called supernatural happenings. Canada's foremost science fiction writer, Hugo Award winner Robert J. Sawyer, hosts the 17-part series.
The Supernatural Investigator documentaries were produced for VisionTV by Arcadia Entertainment Inc., Elevator Films, Ocean Entertainment Ltd., Paradocs, Riddle Films Inc. and Sorcery Films Ltd.
VisionTV's Tuesday night lineup also features the science fiction drama series Quantum Leap (9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT) and Poltergeist: The Legacy (weeknights at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT).

Poltergeist: The Legacy DVDs

season 1-4. yup that's what we said, all of them! if you're interested, be sure to kick it over to the site to get the info.

Poltergeist: The Legacy Seasons 1,2,3 and 4

On DVD! Another talented actress that we got to enjoy in Poltergeist: The Legacy, Jordan Bayne (who played Nick's long lost love who died in action, Julia Walker) is doing the same: directing, writing and now staring in an upcoming horror flick called "High Moon". Why should you be excited? Well aside from seeing this blue-eyed wonder woman in action, she's going to be shoulder to shoulder with Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow/Batman Begins), Rutger Huer (Soldier of Orange with our own Precept, Derek de Lint), Sean Bean (who also starred with Derek de Lint in Tom & Thomas and a ton of other great projects) and producing this art? None other than the king of martial arts action, John Woo.

And speaking of Derek de Lint, he's been busy with his move back to his home country (we miss you!!) with Black Book and a television series "Deadline". (trailer below)

Our team is already drooling at the possibilities!

-thanks to aj for the tip!

Seasons on DVD

Fox has no plans in the near future of putting the remaining seasons on DVD but that hasn't stopped us from offering a service to fans. But thanks to this new NBC show, serial killers, zombies, neighborhood conspiracies, and deadly secrets could add some spook to your otherwise humdrum summer nights. With 13 stand-alone installments from masterminds like Mary Harron (American Psycho), Ronny Yu (Freddy vs. Jason), and Brad Anderson (The Machinist) horror junkies can get a weekly 40-minute fix of fear. Time will tell how it stacks up against the 15 shows on the following screens, which set the bar high for chill-inducing TV.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE
(1959-64)

To mimic Rod Serling's introductory monologue to his ground-breaking anthology program:
It lies in the pit of man's fears (and hopefully somewhere in your DVD collection). This is a television show with imagination. It is a series which we call The Twilight Zone.
The coordinates are a little sketchy: it's in an alternative universe, a fifth dimension, somewhere between heaven, sky, and earth, a middle ground, off a highway exit, on the outskirts of a small town, around the block, or the next stop.... But the episodes are as well-known as the back of your hand: ''To Serve Man,'' ''The Eye of the Beholder,'' and that terrifying tale of air-travel-gone-awry, ''Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.''

AMERICAN GOTHIC
(1995-96)

Set in the small town of Trinity, South Carolina, American Gothic is about a sheriff, a schoolteacher, and a young boy. Sounds innocent enough, except that Sheriff Lucas Buck (Gary Cole) is the devil; the schoolteacher, Selena (Brenda Bakke), is his evil partner in crime/part time lover; and the boy, Caleb (Lucas Black), is the Sheriff's son, conceived when the cop raped his saintly mother. Yeah, ''nefarious'' doesn't adequately describe this town's seedy underbelly. It's hard to decide what's creepier, an almost-too-convincingly evil Gary Cole, or the perpetually arched eyebrows on Lucas Black.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT
(1989-96)

What would happen if there were Siamese twins, and one was good and the other was evil? Or if a serial killer was parading around dressed as Santa? Or if a cat gland was implanted in a homeless guy's brain? Or if a radio talk show host committed murders for ratings? Or if an older model killed her younger competition? Or if a vampire was fired from his job at the local blood bank? Just find your way through the door, down the hallway, into the basement, and turn the channel to HBO, which allowed gore-hounds Robert Zemeckis, Richard Donner, Joel Silver, and Walter Hill to hatch this wickedly adult anthology, inspired by the EC Comics of old.

THE X-FILES
(1993-2002)

Fox ''Spooky'' Mulder (David Duchovny) and straight-edge scientist Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are FBI agents who have met their fair share of monsters, demons, and alien clones, but it's the corrupt government that keeps them up at night. Mulder and Scully are crusaders into the unknown, but their nemesis doesn't eat bodies for sustenance or elongate his body to fit through air vents. He's just an old guy in a nice suit whose wrinkled face is constantly framed by an ominous cloud of smoke.

THE OUTER LIMITS
(1963-65)

It has monsters and aliens and dimensional time travel and a witty opening monologue from a Control Voice that isn't above begging and brainwashing to keep you tuned in. But what makes The Outer Limits special are the ethical dilemmas it poses. The flawed hero of the week often ends up in the same boat as the audience — feeling uneasy, alienated, or maybe just plain terrified. The series never quite recaptured the magic of its first season in 1963, but its mid-'90s revival addressed biochemical warfare, genetic mutation, artificial intelligence, and overpopulation. A collection of fantastic scenarios that seemed not entirely outside the realm of possibility, The Outer Limits is scary because it doesn't seem so ''out there.''

CARNIVALE
(2003-05)

Long before audiences got Lost, there was Carnivale, a series about circus freaks which was more cryptic than a catatonic fortune teller. It had a plot that twisted like a charmed snake — revolving around two men, young Ben Hawkins (Nick Stahl) and Brother Justin Crawford (Clancy Brown), and an all-encompassing battle between Good and Evil — and a mythology bigger than a 400-pound man.

MASTERS OF HORROR
(2005- )

A few of the creepsters that Showtime's Masters of Horror would like you to meet: Corpses who bar dance, orgy-loving zombies, demonic babies, insect enthusiasts, soldier corpses with political savvy, and serial-killer hitchhikers who pick the wrong ambulance to ride.

NIGHT GALLERY
(1970-73)

After The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling set up shop in a poorly lit museum and took audiences on guided tours of works of art. But you didn't have to be an aesthete to appreciate these paintings: The gallery wasn't so much a nod to artistic talent as it was a way to introduce the week's scary story.

POLTERGEIST: THE LEGACY
(1996-99)

A secret society exploring paranormal anomalies and supernatural evil, the Legacy pledges to protect the innocent from whatever evil may be lurking in the shadows. Also on their to-do list: keep friends away from vampires, take down cult leaders, make sure portal of hell isn’t breached...you know, the usual.

KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER
(1974-75)

''Has-been big-city reporter'' Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) isn't afraid to do some of his own investigative journalism, even if it means losing the respect of his co-workers, or losing his job. But while other authorities deny the existence of Native American bear-spirits, headless motorcyclists, high fashion witches, and giant lizards, for Kolchak, it's just another day on the job. While the series often veered from horror into black comedy, it still summoned up a few scares, and inspired its much more successful successor, The X-Files.

MILLENNIUM
(1996-99)

Frank Black (the gravelly voiced Lance Henriksen) is not your typical FBI profiler. He can put himself into the minds of criminals; see visions of the world through a killer's eyes. The grim Seattle setting adds to the spook, as do the apocalyptical prophesies from the morally ambiguous Millennium Group. And this Chris Carter show gets bonus points for casting Terry O'Quinn before the Lost boys made it cool.

TWIN PEAKS
(1990-91)

On April 8, 1990, audiences watched as Pete Martell, a lumberjack from the town of Twin Peaks, Wash., discovered the body of a young woman wrapped in plastic. And thus, one of TV's biggest cult hits was born. David Lynch's series had everyone asking who killed the popular, sweet, homecoming queen Laura Palmer? The town's bizarre citizens, combined with Dale Cooper's other worldly dreams, gave this mystery thriller just the right amount of supernatural scare.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS
(1955-62)

Hitchcock is the master of suspense, mayhem, and macabre; and he'll grab you right in the opening sequence. His droll greeting after the Funeral March of a Marionette is teasing; he sounds quite pleased that he's about to scare the bejesus outta you.

AMAZING STORIES
(1985-87)

It's a series entitled Amazing Stories, with a superstar like Steven Spielberg at the helm, big name directors like Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorsese, and Kevin Costner, Charlie Sheen, and John Lithgow as a few of the many notable guest stars. Knowing all of that, you'd think Amazing Stories would have stories that were, well, a little more amazing. Not all episodes were winners (the one where the boy saves Santa from jail comes to mind), but some managed to mix the perfect blend of horror and fantasy — like the psychic who contacts a serial killer or a horror film director whose monsters come to life.

Back From the Brink

Wow, it's been awhile but let me tell you, we have some awesome news to report. we're getting ready to bring fellow fans season 2 onto the site but one of the original cast members is getting ready to kick some serious ass in the movies! The screenplay, written by Verhoeven and Gerard Soeteman, is inspired by the true stories of Dutch resistance fighters, and the resulting project was the most expensive Dutch movie ever made. The expense is justified, and the subtitles are worth putting up with because this is a compelling feature with strong characters, impressive acting and an ever-growing story that picks up from a slow (or was just my resistance to foreign-language film?), confusing start to quickly pull us in.

Carice van Houten is Rachel, a beautiful, fleeing Dutch Jew, whose family is betrayed and murdered. Numb with pain, she soon finds herself involved with the underground resistance [Lead by Derek de Lint] and is asked to establish a romance with a German SS officer, Ludwig Muntz (Sebastian Koch). She is successful and soon finds herself running into Gunther Franken (Kobus), as well. Franken was the leader of the unit that murdered Rachel’s family. The story is well-paced and has many twists along the way to an excellent ending.

History buffs will love this movie, and film fans will agree. There may not be enough action to hold all the ADD viewers, but the excellent story and quality performances and directing make this a little-known renter’s gem.

You can also see it here

Derek de Lint in Black Book

Another teammate posted the vid below and wrote a very short review. If you have a question for Derek de Lint, Martin Cummins, Robbi Chong, Helen Shaver or any of the other cast or crew members, be sure to submit your question. We will spend time collecting the questions and then sending them to the cast mate. Keep in mind that we will not be forwarding the kind of personal questions that we know they would feel comfortable with so keep the questions clean and friendly. After all, we want to show them how much we appreciate their talent and time to answer the questions, right? :)

In other news of the site, we are currently moving things over onto a larger server. She joins the resistance to find out who betrayed her family after all of them were killed in an attempt to reach the liberated south.

<colgroup> <col width="90"> <col> </colgroup>

       Rated:

[ MA ] STRONG VIOLENCE, STRONG COARSE LANGUAGE, STRONG NUDITY

       Cinema release:

       5 Jul 2007

       Director:

       Paul Verhoeven

       Running time:

       144 mins

       Stars:

Carice van Houten, Sebastian Koch, Thom Hoffman

       Links:

               Official Site
IMDb
Rotten Tomatoes

Verhoeven takes sledgehammer to war

Director Paul Verhoeven is notorious for his love of boobs and gore and his complete lack of subtlety, a trend he continues in the World War II epic "Black Book".

But almost despite himself he has still managed to craft an absorbing film here, largely thanks to the charms of his lead star, the beautiful Carice van Houten.

Van Houten is Rachel, a Jewish singer living in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands during WWII. She is plagued by bad luck - in the opening minutes of the film the people she has taken refuge with are bombed, and soon after her family is gunned down by Nazis as they try to escape to Allied territory - but the determined fire in her eyes never burns out.

After her family is murdered, Rachel falls in with grocer Gerben Kuipers (Derek de Lint), leader of the Dutch resistance - whose members include Smaal (Dolf de Vries), a compassionate lawyer, and handsome doctor Akermaans (Thom Hoffman).

During a resistance mission, Rachel luckily befriends SS leader Muntze and infiltrates the enemy's headquarters. She sets about bringing down the SS from the inside and avenging her family - not realising that double-crossers are all around her.

"Black Book" is often genuinely gripping and clips along at an entertaining pace, but suffers greatly under Verhoeven's sledgehammer touch. The bad guys are fat, lustful brutes, the dialogue is obvious and excessive, and themes are painted in broad strokes.

But Verhoeven's biggest mistake is to tell the story in flashback, meaning that the audience knows Rachel is never in any real peril. The fact that you nevertheless care deeply for her is a credit to Van Houten's appealing performance.

If Verhoeven had toned "Black Book" down a few notches it could have been a wartime masterpiece, not simply the entertaining thriller it is.

Black Book

`Black Book'
Now playing: Century Downtown, High Ridge
Rated: R
Running time: 125 min.
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Grade: B+

Review: Verhoeven delivers thrills with World War II melodrama `Black Book'

If you look, you'll find similarities between Dutch-born director Paul Verhoeven's latest film, "Black Book," which he shot in his homeland, and the seven movies he made for Hollywood over 15 years, beginning in the mid-1980s with "Flesh & Blood."

The sexuality, contrivances, violence and excesses of "Black Book" mark it as a relative of such memorable Verhoeven efforts as "Basic Instinct," "Showgirls," "RoboCop" and "Starship Troopers."

But it's more interesting to compare "Black Book" with Steven Soderbergh's "The Good German." Although Verhoeven's film takes place during the last months of World War II and Soderbergh's is set just weeks after Germany's surrender, both put a contemporary spin on a 60-year-old story.

Where Soderbergh attempted to imitate the black-and-white grit of film noir, Verhoeven aspires to colorful lushness. Soderbergh aimed for cerebral; Verhoeven prefers lurid.

"German" was, to put it kindly, boring. "Book" is a thrill ride of bombings, betrayals, shootings, seduction and spying.

Soderbergh was all about cynicism. Verhoeven's film is permeated with cynicism, too, but it's prettier and has a more upbeat soundtrack.

A chance reunion in Israel in October 1956 prompts a flashback to Holland in September 1944. Rachel Stein (Carice van Houten) is a Jewish cabaret singer doing whatever she has to in order to survive the Nazi occupation.

She lives through random bombs and a horrifying betrayal and winds up in the care of a Dutch Resistance cell headed by Gerben Kuipers (Derek de Lint). After working menial jobs, Rachel - now known as Ellis de Vries - gets a more dangerous assignment.

Ellis shows Kuipers and field leader Hans Akkermans (Thom Hoffman) that she can think on her feet. She turns a chance meeting with Gestapo chief Ludwig Muntze (Sebastian Koch) into her entree into the local Nazi headquarters, where she tries to get information that will help captured Resistance members.

A likable opportunist, Rachel uses her brains, her looks and her feminine wiles to great success. The film references "Mata Hari," and indeed van Houten channels a little bit of Greta Garbo, facing danger with a sexy smile and an unrestrained laugh and falling in love with the enemy.

The screenplay by Gerard Soeteman and Verhoeven puts Rachel/Ellis through the wringer, and there are times when she seems to bounce back too quickly. But, again like Garbo, it's part of an innate bravado that's a necessary tool.

The film is not subtle in its depiction of the Nazis: handsome Koch ("The Lives of Others") plays the sympathetic, reasonable one while pasty, balding Waldemar Kobus plays the evildoer who provokes Rachel's drive for revenge.

The Resistance members are less well developed, but since the filmmakers seem to want them to be enigmatic, that works.

"Black Book" doesn't deal in good guys and bad guys. Some of the Dutch are as anti-Semitic as the Nazis, and while Muntz's backstory and fondness for Ellis make him sympathetic, it's important to remember that this is the end of his tour of duty; heaven only knows the atrocities he committed before the movie began.

"Black Book" ranges from naive to world-weary and crisp action to unabashed melodrama. In one breath it proclaims that justice will prevail, and in the next it implies that the flaws in human nature will always rule. Luckily, Verhoeven's skills make the schizophrenic perspectives a rush to watch.

Leafing through shades of grey - Diversions

Leafing through shades of grey - Diversions

Despite what many history books tell us, lines were not as clearly drawn during World War II as we might have originally believed. Or such is the message Black Book attempts to send, as it challenges the familiar right vs. wrong and Allies vs. Axis tale of WWII.

Dutch actress Carice van Houten plays Rachel Stein, a Jewish singer-turned-fugitive who lives with a Christian family in Holland at the onset of German anti-Semitic aggression. When the family's house gets bombed, a member of the Resistance comes to Rachel's aid and reunites her with her family. Together, they embark on a secret voyage down the rivers to a liberation front. But in typical Murphy's Law fashion, things begin to go wrong as the first of many traps, backstabbings and betrayals occurs with the brutal death of Rachel's entire family by the member of the Resistance, who actually turns out to be a secret member of the Nazi party.

Stranded, Rachel is assisted by Gerben Kuipers (Derek de Lint), who gives her a new name, identity and hairdo, all of a German style. Now a blonde bombshell named Ellis de Vries, Rachel is sent to spy on a high-ranking German officer named Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch) and to gather as much information as she can on the real Resistance.

Ellis allows herself to be sexually exploited to grow closer to her enemy, causing her identity to transform so much that she is hardly recognizable as the young and Jewish Rachel Stein. She chooses to abandon who she used to be in favor of commitment to the Resistance. But Ellis' reasons for wanting to die are the same reasons she falls in love with Müntze: After the deaths of both of their families, they both want to get through the war with as little bloodshed as possible.

Throw in a love story that is doomed to fall apart and a set of complicated plot twists, and you have a film that explores the suffering of nearly every person involved in WWII, be it a Nazi or a member of the Resistance. As a result, the best adjective to describe Black Book is revealing. There have been more than enough movies about the Holocaust, Nazis, WWII and Jewish survivors, yet this movie manages to surprise by making the Nazi captain Müntze both highly likable and even sympathetic. And although Black Book consists of many languages, such as German, Polish and English, solid performances by nearly all the actors allow them to bridge the language gap.

The score is great, the story is captivating, and the acting is nothing less than Oscar-worthy, making Black Book a clever, multilayered and emotional film with the potential to be as popular as the eccentric Roberto Benigni's Life is Beautiful.

When stereotypes are turned on their heads by mixing good with evil and black with white, the result can be an eye-opening experience. Black Book is certainly one of those films that will leave you trying to understand those shades of gray.

Poltergeist: The Legacy update

New episode to view on thelegacy-ws.com as we see Derek de Lint, playing Dr. Derek Rayne as he investigates, with his team, an old friend and possible child abuser in "Sins of the Father".

Derek de Lint; Black Book

We've updated the site http://www.thelegacy-ws.com/ with some screen caps and videos from Derek de Lint's latest American Premiering movie "Black Book".
